Sounds like the same things the dealer in Biloxi had in stock when I bought my bike in Feb 98. They should mount to the frame using a u-bolt, and ride about where the lower frame branches off to cradle the motor. Mike (my dealer down there) let me test a set that had been opened. I installed them, rode around the parking lot, and gave them back to him. The pegs rode a little high for my taste, and only moved my feet a couple inches in relation to the stock peg location. I felt that the $61 would be better spent if I saved up for a set of forward controls. I don't know what the current prices are, but last time I checked, HH wanted almost $500, cable/rod HD style were $200, never checked on OEM units (not satisfied with the finish quality of Japanese chrome, too rough/thin).
For some people the highway pegs are probably perfect. We have a set on the touring bike, and I'll occasionally use them. It looks like Lisa is going to get the Savage full time, with me getting a 1500LC Intruder, Shadow Spirit or older (Shovelhead at the newest) Harley. Just can't handle the cramps I get from trying to ride the Savage any longer. The mods to make it comfortable for me would be 16" apehanger bars, forward controls, recut seat, longer/reraked forks, probably lenthening the frame and/or swingarm. No point in chopping it up that much when there are other bikes out there that fit me better.
Hope the highway pegs work out for you if you decide to go for them. See you on the road.
